OK Youth Shooting (SCTP)

Do You Know Where Your Children Are;  - Welcome to SCTP

Several years ago, this message was played on television screens around the country to remind parents to be aware of where their kids were and what they were doing.    Nowadays, with cell phones, e-mail, text messaging, and so many forms of communication parents are still wondering where their children are. Let me suggest that one of the best places your child could be is on the skeet fields. Let me explain:

If I asked you the type of people you would prefer for your child to hang out with, your answer would likely be disciplined, intelligent, focused people with a definite goal and purpose.

When your youngster joins an SCTP team at the Tulsa Gun Club, they will be surrounded by doctors, lawyers, engineers, business owners, and former and current military personnel, as well as other students with a positive attitude and high GPA in school.    The fact is that the fundamentals required to successfully shoot clay targets are the same fundamentals required to succeed in school and life.    Those fundamentals include mental preparation, concentration, agility, and the ability to focus on the task at hand.

The Scholastic Clay Target Program and the Oklahoma Youth Shooting Sports Association were started to develop these skills to benefit both youth and parents, and the program has been very successful across the U.S. There are currently about 18,000 youth involved in the SCTP program this year. This is an excellent sport for home schooled kids to become part of a team and “hang out” with other kids and influential adults.

At the Tulsa Gun Club, this will be our fourth year sponsoring the SCTP and fall is the time to join our team.    We have kids in ages from 9-19 and grades 5-12 shooting this year and would love to have your child shoot with us.    Our youth program is currently seeking both boys and girls to try their hand at skeet or trap shooting and make new friends.

We have regular practices at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays and plan to hold some fun shoots during April and May.    The SCTP Oklahoma State Championships will be held at the Tulsa Gun Club and we will send as many youth as possible to the SCTP National Championships in Sparta, IL this August.    Oklahoma teams have placed second in the nation on two separate occasions and we hope to better that record this year.

I would ask that you consider bringing your child to try shooting a few rounds and then make the decision about joining the SCTP. If you need to borrow a shotgun, let me know and I can provide one for use and practice. Just ask the club manager, Rich Pounds, for more information or contact me, Joel Blankenship at 521-4223.

Thank you for considering the Tulsa Gun Club, the SCTP, and continuing supporting our youth program.    The next time someone asks “Do you know where your children are?” answer with “Yeah, they’re shooting skeet with their friends”.

Shoot well,

Joel Blankenship

SCTP coach and State Director
